The Thirty-sixth Year

Ducal Prize Tournament

August 31-September 3, 2001 (AS XXXVI)

Yolo County Fairgrounds,
Woodland, CA

From The Page (July, 2001):

This year's Ducal Prize tourney will be at the Yolo County Fairgrounds-the same site as March Crown and last year's Ducal While it may be quite warm, there are showers on site. We are aware that the flies distressed several of you who attended last year-those of us who were working were also distressed! Our contract with the fairgrounds this year ensures they will remove their small dumpsters, clean the stables near site and spray the week before Ducal. As usual, this is an event jointly sponsored by the West Kingdom and by KHTI, with the profits to gp toward the purchase of a permanent tourney site for the West Kingdom.

The preliminary competition list includes:

Fighting:

Axe and (optional) Shield List, Sword-and-Shield List, Superhero Melee: Costumes and props are expected and must be field-legal in some manner. This competition will, of course, he run on Saturday morning. Handicapped Melee: All entrants mil select a "handicap" from a jar; this will be done before the competitor auction. Florentine (in any form) Melee: 2 weapons; no shields; not limited to 2-sword. Ducal Team Melee, 2-Man-Tied-Together Melee, Resurrection Melee

Evening Activities:

Friday Night Request Bardic, Disney Filk: Participants must be prepared to sing the original song (at least one verse) and identify its provenance if it is not known to the judges. Music played on Drums: NOT drumming; actual instrumental pieces. Must have drums; may have other instruments; extra points for documentation. Theme Bardicon the Subject "Pirates". Bodacbus Beards: May be "artificial"; must be worn. The Sunday Night Casbah.

A&S: Because we have had to cancel so many A&S activities at the last few Ducal Prize Tourrties, we are planning only two competitions: Curdled Milk: You can either make a curdled milk product (cheese, sour cream, yogurt); make a dish using a curdled milk product; or make a dish using a curdled milk product you have made. Carving: Any medium - wood, hone, ice, cheese (see above)....

Rapier Fighting: to be determined.

Games:

Hunkerhauser: heavy and light divisions. Obstacle Relay Race: For teams of three. Limbo in Armor. Combination Scavenger Hunt/Trivia Contest. Drag Races: Boys dressed as girls; girls dressed as boys - scored on attitude, not speed. Drag Races - With Shields: Teams of four; one person on a shield; shield on the ground - scored on speed.

Boffer List: Page School rules.

And finally, the annual session cf Monday Morning Wrestling!!!

Plus all the usual other stuff that seems to have become a traditional part of Ducal Prize.

AS ALWAYS, Ducal Prize needs stuff. Your stuff. My stuff. Everyone's stuff. Donations to use as prizes, for the Garage Sale, and to fuel the Monster-Auctions-from-Hell. We can't hold a three-hour auction for your listening and shopping pleasure if you don't give us stuff to sell back to you, now can we??? Remember that donations of services can be just as attractive as donations of goods. In fact, dinners and such-like have been some of our most successful offerings! Talk to Eilis ahead of time if you're not sure about your ideas. Also call Eilis if you want to donate something bulky which will need to be picked up ahead of time.

Site fee is $5, which gets you five raffle tickets. Since this is a jointly-sponsored event, be ready to sign a waiver at the gate. Site opens Friday at 1PM. If you show up earlier, you are on the set-up crew. Friday night will feature the Special Request Bardic Circle, starting after dinner. Saturday and Sunday will be full of competitions, auctions, and the world-famous Ducal Garage Sale. Monday will be wrapup and tear-down time. The site closes at 6pm.

The Supreme Commissar this year is Eilis O'Boime (contact info omitted). Contact her about donations, to make suggestions, or to volunteer to work.
