From The Page (May, 2000):
Ahoy mateys! Summer looms just beyond the horizon, bringing with it a great yearning for the sea. Don yer sea legs and come sail upon the foamy brine with the pyrates, privateers, and other mariners of the Glorious West Kingdom! Participate in daring deeds! Delight in "spending" the small bag of "coins" that each adventurer will receive at the gangplank (gate)! But look carefully which coins you receive, for one random booty bag will contain a special silver coin, and its new owner will be crowned the Pyrate King or Queen (our version of the Lord or Lady of Misrule)! More coins may be earned by participating in the event activities, or at the whim of the Pyrate King or Queen. Save your coins, for they will be the currency for a grand booty auction at the end of the event!
Daytime activities will include an open arts & sciences display and nautical/pyrate trivia sponsored by the Loyal Guild of St. Erasmus (Known World Nautical Guild), as well as some silly team races, including peg leg, water bucket relay, loot carrying, and obstacle courses. There will plenty of fighting, both rapier and heavy (including rubber chicken fencing!). Other contests include Hunker Hauser, tug-o'-war, line heaving for accuracy, and quoits (ring toss). One highlight will be the themed role-playing fights, where each combatant is given a 3x5 card explaining a character role they must play during the ensuing bout, with a narrator setting the scene for the spectators.
Merchants: In lieu of an additional merchants' fee, we ask that you donate an item to the booty auction.
Site Fee: $7, children 3-12 are $3, children under 3 are free Important!: Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or they will not be allowed on site.
Autocrat: Malachias von Morgenstem (contact info omitted). For additional information, go to (website omitted) and click on "Pyrates' Festival". If you would like to help out with this event (and future events like it), send a blank email to (email omitted).
