The Thirty-third Year

Bardic Competition -- Principality of the Mists

September 12, 1998 (AS XXXIII)

Camp Herms,
El Cerrito, CA

From The Page (August, 1998):

This year the Bard of the Mists competition and feast will be held at Camp Herms Boy Scout Camp in El Cerrito. This site may be subject to change, see the September page for site confirmation. This is a dry site, and period candle illumination is allowed. Competition will begin at 1PM.

Duchess Juana Isabella de Montoya y Ramirez ("You spilled my soup, prepare to die.") is cooking the three-remove feast this year. In honor of the Bard, most of the food is from the Italian Peninsula, and to please the Bard's lady, there are many vegetarian dishes. Prepare to be stuffed.

Competition will take place in five rounds, each to allow the contestants to demonstrate their skill in various bardic areas. The winner will serve their Highnesses of the Mists and the Principality for one year as Bard of the Mists and is expected to use his/lier creativity and artistry to bring honor to the Mists.

The order is: First Round, Period Piece: A period piece (story, song, poem, sung, played, spoken, etc.) with documentation. Second Round, Original Piece in Period Style: An original piece in a period style with documentation. Third Round, Bard's Choice: A piece about fun, mirth, and/or merriment. (The piece itself does not necessarily need to be funny, and non-SCA related pieces are acceptable.) Fourth Round, Master work: This does not have to be an original, but should show off your abilities. Fifth Round, Impromptu: Contestants will each have 15 minutes to create a piece using 3 words pulled out of a hat. Bring writing materials. (Documentation and such is not necessary for this round.)

Autocrat: Alessandro chi Marestrale, (contact info omitted).
