The Thirty-first Year

Baroness' Birthday Ball -- Teufelberg

April 19, 1997 (AS XXXI)

Scout Hut,
Lafayette, CA

From The Page (March, 1997):

What's this, you say? Shires don't have Baronesses? Ah, but our Shire has a multitude of Court Barons, Viscounts, Counts, Dukes, Masters, and all their female counterparts, too! We are, after all, a bedroom community for the Mists, and a lot of Peers live within our bounds.

It just so happens that one of our Court Baronesses, Annalind Airamid the Healer, has a birthday in April, and we thought that would be a dandy excuse for a party. We're once again having a Teufelberg event that evokes the early days of the SCA; low-key, potluck, just a bunch of friends getdng together to have fun. We'll have a Court only if we're forced to by attending Royalty. Baroness Annalind and the entire Shire hope that everyone will come, and we extend a special invitation to everyone who lives or works within the Shire.

At Annalind's request, there will be dancing. We will open the hall at 2pm for setup, and have dance Instruction and practice from 3 until 5. After the feast, we will dance (we're hoping to live musicians) from 7 until 10. During the dancing, there will be two contests: Best Dressed Couple, and Best Death While Dancing. Contestants will be disqualified if they cause injury to another dancer while "dying".

For those with tired feet, we will also have chairs and tables for games, needlework, and gossip conversation. Please bring banners, contained candles, and works to display, whether finished or not.

The feast will be from 5 until 7. The contest for this portion will be Main Dish Subtieties: what can you prepare that looks like something else? No documentation is required, but we do need a list of ingredients, Persons coming to the feast who are not entering the contest are asked to bring another dish to the potiuck. Please be aware that there are electrical outlets, a range and refrigerator, but no oven. The Shire will provide hot and cold beverages. This is a dry site.

Site Fee: In addition to your pot luck contribution, we are asking for a site fee of $5 per person, $2 for those 6-12 years old, and free for children under 6. Coupons for $1 off the site fee will be available at each of the March and April Shire meetings. Yes, this is a blatant attempt to get more participation in Shire meetings. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm; contact Astridth or Annalind (see below), or our Seneschale Christiana (see Regnum) for location.

Autocrats: For further information, contact Mistress Astrith of Swansvale (contact info omitted), or email Baroness Annalind at (contact info omitted).

Description of this event (if any), taken from The Page, or from memory of at least one person who attended the event.
