Newcomer Weekend -- Golden Rivers

April 11-13, 1997 (AS XXXI)

All fires must follow the West Kingdom Standards. All pets must be on a leash and attended at all times. Horses are welcome, and will be provided a shaded area. The Van Vleck Ranch is an undeveloped area; there is no water on site. There will be a water buffalo for non-potable water needs, but be sure to bring drinking water. There is a store 1.5 miles from the site at the Rancho Murieta Shopping Center. There will be Porta-Privies only. There are plenty of shady glens for camping. This Is a discreet wet site, All children must be supervised at all times as there are two small lakes in the camp area. NO SWIMMING or WADING.

Newcomers are encouraged to camp with an experienced "sponsor" and enjoy the event being introduced to new friends and learning new things. For information about "sponsors", contact the autocrat or come to Golden Rivers' fighter practice which is listed in the back of The Page, The focus of this weekend will be teaching. Classes will be informal, and will include basic SCA/mundane camping tricks, tourney fighting for new fighters, archery, garb basics, children and pets at events, merchant row bartering. Kingdom Laws, court dance, the art of being a "gentle" person, and many others. There will be a tourney on Saturday for three separate experience levels of fighters 6 mos. to 1 yr., 3 to 6 mos., and of course, today to 3 mos. he tourney will begin at 1:00 in the afternoon to allow them time for authorizing. Evening activities include Bardic Circle on the Eric hosted by the autocrat, and a conversation "pit" for those "no doo, there 1 was...!" stories and general conversation.

Site fee: $3.00 per person; $1.00 for children 12 and under.
