The Thirtieth Year

Viking Tourney -- Mountain's Gate

October 21-22, 1995 (AS XXX)

Rancho Seco Recreational Area,
Herald, CA

From The Page (September, 1995):

We've done it before, and we're doing it again. For the fifth time the Shire of Mountain's Gate will be holding a Viking Tourney. The site will open Friday at 1:00 pm -do not arrive early- and will close at 5:00 pm on Sunday.

Site Fee: The site fee has not been finalized; i t will be published in the October Page.

Contests: This year the championship will be determined by a Pentathlon of Viking activities. Each entrant will be scored on the five contests they have chosen. We are planning: a slight variation on our usual center-grip round shield tourney, a boffer great axe tourney, axe throwing, carpet-tube caber tossing, a spear chase. Four Month Metheglin brewing contest (both undocumented and documented to a pre- 1700 recipe), writing and guessing Exeter style riddles, and a Viking captain's test,

N.B. 'Four Month Metheglin' means that only entries started after June 1st, 1995 are eligible. For these contests, metheglin is defined as a fermented mixture of: Ploney, Water, and Yeast, flavored by Spice(s) and, possibly, Herb(s). A person may enter only two examples of their work, at least one of which must be documented. A person may count only one of these brewing contests toward the championship.

Assorted other activities not part of the championship competition are also planned (i.e.: steal the sheep).

Valkyrie will be present to insure all the valiant (and who but the valiant would presume to darken our meadhall) are in a fit state to enter Valhalla (a franchise of which will be on site Saturday eve).

Autocrat: Rorius Domhnall Kithwell (contact info omitted)

Site: The Rancho Seco Recreational Area. (address omitted).

Description of this event (if any), taken from The Page, or from memory of at least one person who attended the event.
