The Twenty-ninth Year

May Festival -- Eskalya

May 14, 1994 (AS XXIX)

Site: Airlifter Chalet, Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, AK

From The Page (April, 1994):

Spring is the time for love and renewal of life. House Silver Tree invites you to join us in a May Festival and Beltane Celebration. Flowers, ribbons, bells, games, prizes, fighting tournament, dancing, singing, lots of food, fun, and frolic will abound. We will go a-maying and decorate hats with the flowers. A May Pole Dance will be performed. There wlll be a bardlc on site Saturday night.

There will be a "Love and Glory Tournament". The victor will crown his/her consort Queen or King of the May. We are trying to center our events around the May Royalty to show our appreciation of the inspiration the consort brings to the fighter. The tourney will consist of several different scenarios in which participants receive points for fighting, winning, and extra points for chivalry. There will be bridge battles, one to one battles, a melee, challenges with different weapons, bear pit, and team fighting, we request you bring some different types of weapons to use for the challenges, like pole arms, hammers, axes, maces, broad swords, etc.

With the fun and excitement of spring, it's a wonderful time to get better acquainted with others, so bring a dessert basket to share with a lord or lady of the opposite sex and we will auction if off and give you $1 off the site fee. The feast will be pot luck. Bring dishes according to the first letter of your last name: A-E breads, F-J fruit, K-O vegetables/salads, P-Z side dishes. There will be a brunch on Sunday.

We will hold a spring market on Sunday. This will be a swap meet type of activity, so when you do your spring cleaning, gather up S.C.A. type things you no longer use/want and bring them to the Spring Market to sell. Extra feast gear, garb, armor, etc. can be bought, sold, traded. All transactions will be determined between the owner and buyer.

Merchants are welcome on both days, so far we have merchants selling hats and pouches, herbal lotions, material and notions, and armor. Contact the autocrat if you would like to set up at this event.

Fighter practice will be on site Sunday afternoon.

Competitions: Love and Glory Tournament; Ax throwing contest; "and then some reel" dance marathon; best song, poem or story contest; and children's games.

Autocrat: Cassandra von Verden (name/contact info).

Site Fee $8.50, $5 for 7-12 year olds; 6 and under free. The site is Airlifter Chalet (formerly MAC Chalet) on Elmendorf AFB. The site is at Six Mile Lake. Keep children away from the water.
