The Twenty-seventh Year

Ducal Prize Tournament

September 4-7, 1992 (AS XXVII)

From The Page (June, 1992):

Ducal Prize Tourney will be from Friday, 4 September to Monday, 7 September. We promise the return of all the things you love about Ducal-the wierd filk, the resurrection melee, the auctions from hell, the garage sale. We are working on eliminating mosquitoes and excessive heat this year, but we can't make promises. As always, we need donations for prizes, for auction items, and for the garage sale, and we need suggestions for competitions. If you have anything to offer, call or write Ellis O'Boirne, Commissar of Commissars (in Regnum at Kingdom Seneschale).

From The Page (July, 1992):

Ducal Prize Tourney approaches, and you should be saving up your shekels and preparing to attend what is traditionally one of the most interesting events of the year. This event is a major fund-raiser for the Land Fund, and there will be a full schedule of competitions and auctions for your pleasure. Plan to come, enjoy, and support our efforts to acquire a permanent tourney site for the West.

The site for Ducal Prize this year will be the Amphitheater area of Riverfront Park in Marysville. This is the same park we have used before, but it is a totally new area for us. It is, we understand, closer to the river (SWIMMING!) and further away from the traffic noises. It has the same green grass and trees as the rest of the park, Unfortunately, we already know it will be hot, but the Sea Rat Inn will be there with their usual selection of ice creams and ices to help you keep cool. There will be no fighting scheduled during the hottest parts of the day. Directions and site fee in the next issue of the Page. Merchants are welcome, but are asked to donate 10% of their profits to the Land Fund.

We are planning many interesting competitions for your entering and viewing pleasure. Remember, if you don't want to compete yourself, you can buy a competitor at the competitor auctions. Some of the competitions are things you may want to prepare for in advance. This year, they include:

And of course there will be the usual variety of games, fighting events, athletic competitions, the ever-popular garage sale, and the long-day's-auction-into-night. We still, of course, need donations for prizes, auction items, and the garage sale. If you have anything you want to donate, see Eilis at an event or give her a call. Most donations cheerfully accepted-as long as an item has some relevance to the Current Middle Ages, We will take it, but we won't take your old Water heater. (No, wait a minute-we could cut it up and sell the pieces as proto-armor. No, I guess that's too silly ...) Remember, if you don't donate things, we won't have things to sell back to you!

Donations are needed for both the Prizes and Auction, but also for the ever-popular Garage Sale, opening at 9 am (sharp) on Saturday. If you want to donate something, please talk to Frederick or Eilis or Kathrine. We need all sorts of things from jewelry to armor. Even if you don't have a lot of money, you can help the Land Fund by donating your time or services.

Autocrat: This year's Supreme Autocrat is Eilis O'Boirne (address and phone in Regnum under Kingdom Seneschale). The site autocrat is Hans Helvig von Longstrom - you can call him with questions about the site at (phone). The usual crew (and new helpers) will be aiding and abetting.

Ducal Prize Tourney is a mix of fighting and non-fighting activities, interspersed with auctions of various sorts. For many people, one of the highlights of the event is the evening competitions, with their combination of bardic seriousness and random silliness. Others prefer the auctions, from the competitor auctions where you can buy a chance to win a competition to the Grand Auction from Hell on Sunday evening. Others find it a relaxed event with no meetings. Ducal Prize tries to have something for everyone-and usually succeeds.

This year's planned competitions are:

Saturday: (fighting) sword-and-shield list (belted and unbelted), Ducal Team melee, pole-weapon melee, two-man-tied-together melee; (games) quiz of medieval & SCA knowledge, jacks, hunkerhauser, hula-hoop in armor; (A&S) jewelry, fabric heraldry, shoes and socks, tourney chests; (evening) Gilbert & Sullivan filk, theme bardic on Kings, peering.

Sunday: (fighting) 5-foot-or-less-weapons list (greatswords, poleaxes, short spears), resurrection melee, sword-and-mass-weapon melee; (games) scavenger hunt, sprint & relay foot races, backgammon tourney, gurning, "chariot" races; (A&S) cordials, favors, shortbread, arm armor & gauntlets, coloring; (evening) Columbian bardic, limericks (you are given the first line), storytelling (incorporating three drawn words).

Monday: (fighting) pike list (9-footers only), Florentine melee; (games) dance competition, archery; (A&S) PAGE cover, child's field garb, design-a-competition.

Ongoing: The following competitions take place (or have entries accepted) throughout the weekend, and the results will be announced on the days given above: Quiz of medieval and SCA knowledge, coloring, archery, Page cover, design-a-competition. (Note that any competitions which are not obvious will be explained in the site hand-out.)

And of course there will be the ever-popular garage sale and the long-day's-auction-into-night. We still, as always, need donations for prizes, auction items, and the garage sale. If you have anything you want to donate, call Eilis in advance (if you have a chance), but just bring it to the event if you don't. Remember, if you don't donate things, we won't have things to sell back to you!
