The Twenty-seventh Year

White Shield Tourney -- Darkwood

March 13, 1993 (AS XXVII)

Site: La Selva Beach Clubhouse, La Selva Beach, CA

From The Page (February, 1993):

In days of old, noble lords and gentle knights would battle each other in small regional tournaments. They would signal an upcoming tournament by hanging a shield, upon which a note would declare the place and time for the events. If the event was for conquest, where prisoners would be taken and held for ransom, than a black shield would carry the announcement. If the tournament was for love, where fighting was for the love of combat, the honor of one's consort and all mercy was shown to all vanquished, then a white shield would carry the announcement.

In keeping with this tradition, the Barony of Darkwood sends forth a white shield announcing the sixth annual white shield tournament and feast., to be held March 13 in Caer Darth by the Sea. The tournament will be fought in the Darkwood traditional Swiss style. Plan to buy your tickets early. The feast has sold out every year so far.

Autocrat: Sebastian von Baden (phone).

Armor inspection starts at 10:45 and the first melee will begin at 11 a.m. The tournament will start at noon and be fought in the Darkwood traditional Swiss style. The list fee is $2 and one of the prizes is a splendid dagger.

The barony will also provide dancing, wandering minstrels, and an arts contest for best cover drawing for the baronial newsletter "The Drum". Remember - black ink on white paper works best.

The three remove feast, featuring foods they may have eaten during the time of the Norman Conquest, will start promptly at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. for set up. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from the autocrat. The feast has sold out every year so far. Donations of items or services are also welcome for the silent auction that evening.
