From The Page (February, 1988):
The Shire of Rivenoak will be hosting a Medieval Revel February 20th from 2pm until 11pm at the PV Rec Center in Chico. This will be a potluck feast surrounded by lots of fun activities. There will be music, dancing, games, and revelry. Conditional on the weather, there will be fighting, perhaps archery, and other outside amusements. All merchants, musicians and fun-seekers are encouraged to attend. Kitchen facilities are available and some crash space can be provided. This is a wet site. Site fee is $3 to cover the cost of the hall. Dinner is scheduled for 6pm. There will be a small auction beforehand to help pay for the site. Donations will be gratefully accepted and appreciated. A prize of choice of one of a pair of ceramic goblets wil be given for best ornamentation of any usable/functional item, judged on decoration. (Favors and banners are usable items serving a symbolic function, for example. A drawing or design of an object not yet made would not be functional.) Items that have previously won competitions are not eligible. The maker of the best gingerbread castle will receive a box of spices. Extra consideration for the use of whole wheat flower will be given. Castles will be eaten by the populace. To help encourage participation, a ceramic pitcher will be the prize for the best entertainment (music, poetry, plays, juggling, storytelling, etc.) For futher information on the contest or the auction contact Morborle or Arthur (phone). The autocrat for this event is Marianna of Northumbria (phone). Call her anytime, there is an answering machine. DIRECTIONS: (omitted).
