The Nineteenth Year

Baronial Madness
October 20, 1984 (A.S. XIX)

From The Page (October, 1984):

That's right! It's time to go off the deep end in your most creative manner. Help give new meaning to the word insanity. This event is brought to you by some of the most COMMITTED members of the SCA (if they haven't been, they should be!).

Baronial Madness will seize control of your personality on October 20, 1984, at Del Valle Regional Park in balmy Livermore. There will be SCA signs at the park entrance to guide you in, and more signs to guide you out -- if the rangers let any of us leave.

Setup time is 9am. This is a first-come, first-serve site, so early arrival is good. The only site fee will be the park fee of $2.50 per CAR. It will be collected by the rangers at the gate, not by the SCA. Even a demented chronicler can see that it will make sense to carpool.

Directions to site: (omitted)

Contests? Do we have contests! Top spinning. Boffer lists. Medieval trivia. SCA trivia. Scavenger hunt. Henry's Run. "My Guy". Chess. Mouth-full water carriers race for teams (guaranteed to be sanitary). Steeplechase in armor (either I just made that up, or I'm serious -- at this point, there's no way to be sure except show up). Sword vs. Shield. We twisted Alail's arm, and his gauntlet flew off, so now he's sponsoring the gauntlet toss.

And most berserk of all, we have: Name the Baby Baron! That's right, you get a chance to spot those court worthies of today in their swaddling clothes of yesteryear!

You can't miss out on stuff like this! So be there!

AUTOCRATS: Siranna of Hawthorne Hall and Gerstan Heah Leah (phone), and Alan of Ockham (phone).

Remember our slogan: Sound mind in a sound body -- who needs it?

And you won't want to miss this one: Compliment your opponents into submission in the first-ever Flattery Melee!

And look here, my mind is going already. I forgot one of the weirdest contests of all: the three-legged pavane, sponsored by an incognito member of Pied d'Argent. There is, however, no truth to the rumor that we will be holding an Earl of Salisbury melee.

There will be prizes for all contests, and the Chronicler promises to write an account of the most outrageous occurrences (and any subsequent therapy) for the PAGE.

You know, doc, every so often, I get this feeling I'm Duke Paul ...

From The Page (December, 1984):

Many gentles of our fair Kingdom were relieved of their excess sanity at this stirring event. Among the contest winners were (forgive me if I left any out):

Frederick and Eilis led the field in the Three-Legged Pavane. Rhiannon Lighthawk complimented her opponents into untter submission in the Flattery Melee. Jade Taylon of Starfall and Kalvan the Sinister won the Henry's Run, closely pursued by the Creaky Chronicler and Eric Edmundsson. Siegried von Hoflichkeit and Merewyn de Lyonesse edged the other teams at the SCA Trivia Quiz. Robert of Dunharrow was tops at Tops. Her Majesty Verena had the sharpest eye for the Baby Barons.

County Seat and Electrum disgorged the largest number of items for Tarnmist's scavenger hunt; they got all but 2 of the 44 items on the list, including sheepskin, stuffed animal, lemon, mace, a virgin (over 16), and a eunuch! (Don't ask.)

Flieg (sword) and Chandra Panthi (shield) won the sword-shield team list. The attack montarde contest was won by the team of Jade, Kalvan, Anne of Ockham, and Creaky Chronicler.

Finally, as the sun sank on balmy Livermore and balmy barons, Keridwen o'r Mynydd Gwyrdd was running away with Patrice's Zinger contest, and was acclaimed the person you'd least like to have talking about you behind your back.

And if you didn't make it to Baronial Madness, you'll just have to stay well-adjusted and dull until next year.
