From The Page (October, 1982):
A Renaissance-Medieval Faire, sponsored by the Shire of Applegate, will be held Saturday, October 2 from 10 am to 4 pm. The faire is sponsored by the Shire and the Merced City Parks and Recreation Department. The site is Merced's Applegate Park.
Artists and craftsmen will display, demonstrate and sell their wares in a market-place setting. We plan a day full of games, excitement, laughs and music. Jugglers, jesters, clowns, puppeteers, dancers, archers, actors, poets, fighters and musicians have been invited. So bring your lute or recorder and join the fun. Do come in period costume. A procession and costume contest will be a featured event.
"When people enter the faire, we want them to feel like they have entered another era", states John Servis, Faire chairman. The Shire of Applegate is working hard to create this special atmosphere. Workshops have been held in speaking forsoothly, improvising street scenes and creating simple Renaissance/Medieval era costumes.
We hope to have a contest to select the best dragon.
(A special note to the West: the date was set long ago before we became officially a shire in the West. We regret the conflict with a Crown event; however the date is dictated by local mundane considerations beyond our control.)
Last year's faire attracted some 3,000 persons, we expect more this year.
