From The Page (January, 1982):
On Saturday, February 6, Southern Shores will hold an event geared towards those members of the Populace who have not been members of the SCA for too long. (How long is "too long?" Well, that depends ...) There will be competitions for just about everybody. At present, the contests include the following: Fighting - for fighters qualified for less than one year. More advanced fighters are welcome to bring armor and fight challenges... and perhaps get in shape for the war!; Heraldic Design - entries must be actual submissions for your device. Points will be awarded for heraldic correctness, simplicity, and artistic merit. An initial check will be made by Sebastian, Green Cloak Herald, and devices entered in the contest will be submitted to the COllege of Heralds after the tourney, so have the proper forms filled out. The prize: a banner of the winner's device AS IT FINALLY PASSES. Costume - Two divisions: Best costume for under $10.00 - you can barter for materials, shop thrift stores, rip up old sheets, whatever. Be prepared to document prices; and Best FIRST SCA costume - anyone can enter, but entrise must be for the very first costume you made (no fair buying one from someone else!) and Calligraphy for non-scribes.
Directions and further information will appear in the next issue of the PAGE (either January or February) If you have a contest you are interested in running, please contact the Autocrat: Catherine Kenda of Stillwater (contact info omitted).
