From The Page (December, 1981):
LORD DEFENDER'S TOURNEY AND WINTERFEAST
This year's Winterfeast is planned for the weekend of January 23-24 at Otter Lake Lodge on Fort Richardson. This will be a two-day event with something for everyone's taste. Besides the expected visits from Royalty, this will indeed be an occasion for merrymaking as there are TWO tourneys, a hunt, a wedding, a great feast, and a great many contests to sharpen wills and skills alike.
Winterfeast will be the site of the first Northern Arts Pentathalon, with eight categories to choose from - something for all. There is also a separate contest for Lace Making with a prize of twelve bobbins being a fine incentive for the winner. Those interested in discussion will find a court of discourse offerred by the Queen of Love and Beauty of the North. The topic is in honor of the wedding, and concerns the Rights of the Lady, as a possible extension of the Rights of the Lord, with which the lascivious medieval scholars are familiar. The possible extent of these Rights, as well as to whom they most properly belong will be discussed at the evening's bardic.
As mentioned before there are two tournaments at this event. The first is a Bride's Champion Tourney with the rights, prerogatives, duties, and favors of this position to be directed by the Bride.
The second tourney will select the next Lord Defender of the North and will be held on Sunday. This will be a Round-Robin Lists, the final round to be a Best Two Out of Three. Each match will consist of two combats. The first shall be fought without a shield. Any weapon or combination of weapons is allowed as long as a shield is not used. In the second combat, the use of a shield is allowed. The first combat of the finals will be shieldless.
Tickets for this event will be $8.00 until December 31 and $10.00 thereafter until January 22, and $12.00 at the door (for adults). For children from 6 to 12 years og age, tickets will be $2.00, and for 5 years and under free, regardless of when the reservations are made. Barter arrangements are possible. The cost of the tickets includes the site charge, feast, breakfast, and two lunches.
The Autocrats do beg the Populace to let them be aware of any further competitions or activities desired. If an individual or group wishes to sponsor any activities or contests, please contact Aryana Silknfyre, Kylson Skyfire, or Brendan Shimmering Star. All barter or ticket inquiries and reservations should be directed to Aryana Silknfyre, (contact info omitted). The Autocrats also beg the Populace's indulgence by asking that any and all out of town guests please inform us of your housing and transportation needs, as well as your expected arrival dates as soon as possible so we may make arrangements for your comfort.
From The Page (April, 1982):
Our Lord Defender's Tourney/Winterfeast was graced this year by the presence of Their Majesties, Radnor and Esmirelda, and by Mistress Merewyn de Lyonesse, Mistress Deporodh of Rannoch and Kathleen de Tara, all visitors from the Kingdom of the West.
After an excellent feast, featuring many outstanding cooking contest entries, a royal court was held. Their Majesties presented the following awards to their subjects: Awards of Arms: Adam Elfchaser, Thousand Isles; Kimmel Sableshire, Selveirgaard; Tachibana Kage, Bernadette de Faiirskiee, and Leandra Feathringill, Eskalya. Orders of the Leaf of Merit: Fyodor Featherfluffer and Aryana Silknfyre, Eskalya; Wolf Federweiss, St. Boniface. Order of the Rose Leaf: Aryana Silknfyre.
A closing court wrapped up the day's activities; the highlights of this court were the presentation of the Queen's Order of Grace by Her Majesty Esmirelda to Lord Flynx van Halen.

Annotations:
From a conversation on the West Kingdom mailing list (SCA-West):
"In Oertha, the first Royal Court I ever did (it was a surprise to me, I was
supposed to back court -- long story, no need to discuss here), one of the
amazing things was the first QOG given in Oertha, to Flynx van Halen. He
was way in the back of court, and didn't realize he'd been called into
court. He was hanging out because it's where everyone was, but he didn't
ever really pay much attention to court. That's just the kind of guy he
was. The shocked look on his slightly (well, maybe more than slightly <g>)
drunken face, as he staggered into court for an award. And the round of
applause as he got a standing ovation ... it was pretty cool." -- Hirsch von Henford
"You don't know the tail end of the story. As one of the people way in the back, I got to see his stunned look as he returned to the mead and his friends, and he looked at me and said "what did just happen?" And I got to tell him. We were all so new to the society, that awards like a QOG were rare and not very well known. His surprisingly shy reaction when he figured out what all the applause was about was very touching." -- Morgana yr Oerfa
