From The Page (December, 1981):
LORD DEFENDER'S TOURNEY AND WINTERFEAST
This year's Winterfeast is planned for the weekend of January 23-24 at Otter Lake Lodge on Fort Richardson. This will be a two-day event with something for everyone's taste. Besides the expected visits from Royalty, this will indeed be an occasion for merrymaking as there are TWO tourneys, a hunt, a wedding, a great feast, and a great many contests to sharpen wills and skills alike.
Winterfeast will be the site of the first Northern Arts Pentathalon, with eight categories to choose from - something for all. There is also a separate contest for Lace Making with a prize of twelve bobbins being a fine incentive for the winner. Those interested in discussion will find a court of discourse offerred by the Queen of Love and Beauty of the North. The topic is in honor of the wedding, and concerns the Rights of the Lady, as a possible extension of the Rights of the Lord, with which the lascivious medieval scholars are familiar. The possible extent of these Rights, as well as to whom they most properly belong will be discussed at the evening's bardic.
As mentioned before there are two tournaments at this event. The first is a Bride's Champion Tourney with the rights, prerogatives, duties, and favors of this position to be directed by the Bride.
The second tourney will select the next Lord Defender of the North and will be held on Sunday. This will be a Round-Robin Lists, the final round to be a Best Two Out of Three. Each match will consist of two combats. The first shall be fought without a shield. Any weapon or combination of weapons is allowed as long as a shield is not used. In the second combat, the use of a shield is allowed. The first combat of the finals will be shieldless.
Tickets for this event will be $8.00 until December 31 and $10.00 thereafter until January 22, and $12.00 at the door (for adults). For children from 6 to 12 years og age, tickets will be $2.00, and for 5 years and under free, regardless of when the reservations are made. Barter arrangements are possible. The cost of the tickets includes the site charge, feast, breakfast, and two lunches.
The Autocrats do beg the Populace to let them be aware of any further competitions or activities desired. If an individual or group wishes to sponsor any activities or contests, please contact Aryana Silknfyre, Kylson Skyfire, or Brendan Shimmering Star. All barter or ticket inquiries and reservations should be directed to Aryana Silknfyre, (contact info omitted). The Autocrats also beg the Populace's indulgence by asking that any and all out of town guests please inform us of your housing and transportation needs, as well as your expected arrival dates as soon as possible so we may make arrangements for your comfort.
From The Guardian (February, 1982):
It was the night after the Lord Defender's Tourney that man of the populace of Oertha gathered at the place where King Radnor and Queen Esmiralda were staying. After much casual conversation and a few people (including the King) getting thrown into the snow, the Queen remarked, "Why don't you tell everyone about your attempt at hunting bunnies?" After much prodding, the King agreed to relate his tale.
Shortly after arriving in Eskalya, Sir Kylson engaged the king in hunting sturoies. After many an interesting anecdote, King Radnor remarked that after 21 years of belief in non-hunting, if anyone could get him to go hunting, it would be Kylson. At this, Sir Kylson cried, "Great! Let's go nab us some thumpers!" And off they went.
After hours of tramping through the snow, with Sir Kylson saying, "We'll
be seeing our first bunny any second", they came upon a body of water covered
by ice. Upon being assured by Sir Kylson that the ice was thick enough,
they walked out upon it. Shortly, Sir Kylson was heard to say,
"See how stable
Both King Radnor and Sir Kylson found themselves in water up to their waists. Struggling to shore, they returned home to warm up and shortly the King found himself being dragged back out by Kylson to look for more bunnies. This time, they didn't even find any tracks.
King Radnor ending his story by saying, "If I ever find out which one of you went out ahead of me and warned those bunnies, you're going to get it! The conversation quickly changed to the subject of "lowbush moose."
Famous Quotes by King Radnor:
Our Lord Defender's Tourney/Winterfeast was graced this year by the presence of Their Majesties, Radnor adn Esmirelda, and by Mistress Merewyn of Lyonesse and Mistress Deporodh of Rannoch, all visitors from the Kingdom of the West. The two-day tourney began with a court followed by a wolf hunt. In the first excursion of the wolf hunt, two wolves were successfully tracked down and slain by the hunting party; in the second, a third white wolf appeared and then mysteriously vanished. Next came the Bride's Champion Tourney, for the honor of being the champion of Lady Antadina Exeter du Nordlac who was to be wed later that day. The winner of the tourney was an unknown (?) knight from the West. He gave the bride away at her wedding to Lord Hirsch von Henford, attended by all the populace and officiated by Bishop Roger. During the breaks in the day, the various contests in the Arts Pentathlon were judged. The winners in the contests, who were announced at court the next day, were: Needlework, Annora of Shadowood; Oratory, Adam Elfchaser; Music, Danpira Snowsong; Cooking, Sharane de Kondrack; Calligraphy, Bishop Roger; Dance, Aryana Silknfyre; Herbalism, Wynflaed of Hawksmere; and Heraldry, Sharane de Kondrak. The overall champion was Danpira Snowsong, who achieved high scores in five of the eight competitions. After an excellent feast, featuring many outstanding cooking contest entries, a royal court was held. Their Majesties presented the following awards to their subjects: Awards of Arms: Adam Elfchaser, Thousand Isles; Kimmel Sableshire, Selviergaard; Tachibana Kage, Bernadette de Faiirskiie, and Leandra Featheringill, Eskalya. Orders of the Leaf of Merit: Fyodor Featherfluffer and Aryana Silknfyre, Eskalya; Wolf Feder Weiss, St. Boniface. Order of the Rose Leaf: Aryana Silknfyre, Eskalya. A wonderful bardic followed, featuring a puppet show by Sharane and a marvellous oratory by Ulrich von Matanuska. Time limitations on the site caused bardic to be ended somewhat early.
The following day began with a Council of the North meeting and meetings of the various groups of officers to determine the regional officers. Afterwards, an opening court of the Lord Defender was held, at which the Lord Defender, Kylson Skyfyre, announced the rules for the lists that day. The victor of the tourney was Sir Brendan Shimmeringstar, who won the title of Queen of Love and Beauty for Lady Danpira Snowsong.
Afterwards, there was dancing indoors for those who wished it, while outdoors, a boffer tourney was held for the younger would-be fighters. The victor in this tourney was Jonathan the page, carrying Lady Danpira's favor (Lucky Lady Danpira, to have two such valiant lords fighting for her!)
A closing court wrapped up the day's activities; the highlights of this court were the presentation of the Queen's Order of Grace by Her Majesty Esmirelda to Lord Flynx van Halen, and a declaration of war by House Henneforde against the House of the Singing Phoenix.Editor note from Hirsch: I don't recall our actually being married by Roger, since we never got married mundanely ... maybe it was more of a hand-fasting?

From a conversation on the West Kingdom mailing list (SCA-West):
"In Oertha, the first Royal Court I ever did (it was a surprise to me, I was supposed to back court -- long story, no need to discuss here), one of the amazing things was the first QOG given in Oertha, to Flynx van Halen. He was way in the back of court, and didn't realize he'd been called into court. He was hanging out because it's where everyone was, but he didn't ever really pay much attention to court. That's just the kind of guy he was. The shocked look on his slightly (well, maybe more than slightly <g>) drunken face, as he staggered into court for an award. And the round of applause as he got a standing ovation ... it was pretty cool." -- Hirsch von Henford
"You don't know the tail end of the story. As one of the people way in the back, I got to see his stunned look as he returned to the mead and his friends, and he looked at me and said "what did just happen?" And I got to tell him. We were all so new to the society, that awards like a QOG were rare and not very well known. His surprisingly shy reaction when he figured out what all the applause was about was very touching." -- Morgana yr Oerfa
