The Fourteenth Year

The College of Arms had gotten further and further behind on the processing of applications for arms. Finally the Board (this was during my first term on the Board) decided to host an Heraldic Enclave (it was inevitably called "Heraldicon I" with the intent of clearing the backlog. Prinicpal Heralds and others from all kingdoms, principalities, etc. were invited; as I recall the only Kingdom not represented was the Middle. The four-day session was held at the Leamington Hotel in Oakland; at the end of the event Karina of the Far West passed the baton (of head of the College) to Baldwin of Erebor (if I remember corectly) who became Laurel King of Arms. From an email, October 19, 2004:
"A couple of notes on the Great Heraldic Conclave

• The office of Laurel King of Arms passed from Karina of the Far West to Wilhelm von Schlüssel. I succeeded Wilhelm five years later.
• The lady to the right of Alison von Markheim is Aureliane Rioghail, of Ansteorra. The gentleman to the right (and a little behind) Mistress Aureliane is Dawyd von Markheim. The lady to Aureliane's right (in brown) was, I believe, the An Tir principality herald -- her name escapes me right now. I'm pretty sure the lady in the green cloak behind John ap Griffin is Oreta Heinemann (sp?), who represented Meridies.
• You are correct. The only kingdom not represented was the Middle."

From an email, October 23, 2004:
"The Dave & I were able to talk the BoD into funding the hotel conference room & 1/2 of the trip expenses for each Kingdom' s herald to come to the Enclave, with the individuals or their areas footing the other half. The Middle wasn't willing to pay 1/2 of Dragon's expenses & he couldn't afford to foot the bill, hence the Middle wasn't represented. In a kind of poetic justice, the conclave bounced Dragon's personal arms." -- John ap Griffin

"Telbyrne was bringing the toy horse for the Laurel Sovereign of Arms to ride because Sovereigns should be mounted. I am the one who took the photos you are using on the website. I sent the photos to all the heralds in attendance as a record of that milestone in SCA history." -- Jane't Virago Parva of House Morningstar
