Lord Einrich Armpidsbane, having distinguished himself in terrible and glorious combat this twenty-sixth day of June A.S. XII is hereby declared Lord Defender of the Shire of Eskalya! by the will of the people and my authority as lord fo the Lists - Ragnar
The greatest Tourney yet held in Eskalya took place on June 25 & 26 of the current year at Centennial Park. On the first day, exhibitions of skill and craft were judged, feasting, minstreling and merrymaking were in abundance. Lady Ellen Northrup, an artist of skill and renown, priveledged the Shire with her judgements upon costume and craft. The Lady Maretta Damask (Wanda Blend) was recongnized for the most superb of the entries in the button contest. She had crafted a set of ceramic buttons made from her own mold design, using materials and techniques known well before 1650. Other entries were of wood or fabric.
In costume, Vlamimire the Black and Lady Larissa Katrina of 15th centry Moscow were judged the best couple. Marja Nordama, the lady of a 10th century Norse "trader", the most authenticly dressed of women. Lord Dubos of Jordt (Burt Miller) was the best attired of men as a 15th century German. The daughter of Lord Timujen and the Lady Gayliana, Sharon Denise, was the most authentically attired of the children. During the day, Einrich Armpidsbane took exception to Vladimire's abilities with the Heralds horn, particularly that he as able to make noise with it. A challenge fight was fought in which, though grieviously wounded in the thigh, Einrich struck Vladimire a mortal wound that silenced him for a short while. Several lords took part in wrestling that day, some displayed skill at throwing their opponents, others at flying through the air after being thrown.
A great feast was held, and all contributed to it most chivalrously. Late in the evening, Ulrich von Matanuska and Einrich Armpidsbane distinguished themselves at throwing the double-bladed ax. Other lords showed fine skill at finding the ax amongst thorn bushes after missing their target.
A fine performance of exotic Eastern dancing was done by Lady Larissa Katrina, and many Marvels of Magick were shown by Edward the Silent. Lady Sharane won the acclaim of the populace upon distributing fruit tarts to all and sundry.
At Sunday noon, those lords who had survived the revel assembled for the first Lord Defender's Tourney. The last novices, Rabin the blue, and Edward the Silent, were slain the third round by Einar Isdrakon and Ahben Saladin. Resurrected, a terrible comb took place between Rabin and Edward, the result of which was Edward being proclaimed champion novice. In the fourth round, Einrich Armidsbane slew Isdrakon and Vladimire the black slew Saladin. Einrich then struck two mortal blows across the faceguard of Vladimire's helm and secured the title of Lord Defender. Vladimire was then recongnized supreme among the intermediate fighters. A grand free for all melee was then held and Armpidsbane again distinguished himself. In the closing minutes of the fight Ahben Saladin attacked Hugh of the North, who had been wounded in the thigh. Ahben met his death from Hugh. Then Hugh received a mortal wound from Einrich who then turned and had to fight long minutes against Vladimire. So great was the battle that Einrich lost first his broadsword and then his falchionette. He was able to recover his broadsword however, and smite Vladimire and slay him.
At the closing court, all fighters who had distinguished themselves were recognized and awarded sashes. As champion advanced fighter and Lord Defender, Einrich Armpidsbane was awarded a sash of red and a sash of gold and then received a most wondourous medallion crafted from three rare and precious metals. This first Lord Defender's medallion was made by Lord Einar Isdrakon and donated by him without charge for materials or service. An indication of truly noble generousity.
As Lord Defender, Lord Einrich Armipsbane is due the loyalty and respect of all Eskalya and the honor which comes from being the head of the Shire.
