From The Page (August, 1977):

This year's Celebration of the May was held at Patrick's Point State Park, a most delightful place. The day began with the choosing of a May Queen to preside over the day's festivities. Things then took on a more somber note as one Theodor of the Green was executed for the attempted assasination of Mistress Gonwynnlyn of Hrassvelg at the May Coronation. Theodor was first tied to a stake and forced to read out loud the proclamation ordering his execution. Then he was broken with the hammer by Allyshia's competent constable, Ragnar of the Icy Waste, who was arrayed in classic executioner's garb. Since it happened to be the appropriate day, Theodore was treated to a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday", sung in his honor by the populace. He was then cut down, dragged to the block, and beheaded. Then -- as the populace was commenting on this edifying spectacle, a miracle occurred!! Theodore was, incredibly, brought back to life (?) by a certain Arabic woman who bore a suspicious resemblance to Yolanda del Campo. Dancing and music followed in celebration.

A bransle simple was soon abruptly interruped by two simple brawlers, Sir Baidaan and Robert Kinslayer. A Court of Love was called, and the two offenders were sentenced to be tied back to back for the space of one half hour.

Notable highlight: the Gurning Contest reduced everyone to helpless laughter as each pair faced each other hissing, crouching, and making the most outrageous faces.

The Best Presentation of Flowers to a Lady was won by FellyanDrac the Blind, who tied up Guy of the Silver Horses hand and foot, stuffed a bouquet of flowers in his mouth, and presented him to Mistress Gonwynnlynn. Sir Baidaan won the Groveling Contest by giving the May Queen the shirt off his back when she remarked that it was a little chilly. He also declared her to be the "Light of the World" in between kissing her feet.

Dressed as "Spring" and "Winter", Maelgwyn de Lyonesse and Robert Kinslayer presented an allegorical Battle of the Seasons.

Sir Baidaan was also elected by the ladies to the uplifting job of supporting the Maypole. He was amply rewarded.

Reveling continued into the evening, with a typical game of blind man'd bluff.

Chronicle by Lady Merewyn de Lyonesse.
