Eight Roosters

Lyrics by Emma Westbrook, 2006

(To the Tune of LDS Hymn: O Ye Mountains High)

When I went to the store, it was chicks I looked for
And I thought I would buy me a few.
They were fluffy and cute, sweet and cuddly to boot,
So I thought eight would make a good crew.

Chorus:
Eight roosters, eight roosters, eight roosters in a gang,
They are sneaky and cruel, but we know what to do
And we’re having some dumplings today!

Now the guy at the store said their sex was unsure,
But they’d probably be half & half,
Then they started to grow, and they started to crow
And I realized that I had been had!
 (chorus)

There were no eggs at all, and my spirits would fall
Every time I looked out in their pen.
Then I learned they could bite, and how they loved to fight!
Soon they made me their favorite victim.
 (chorus)

Well, we butchered up some and I learned to pluck one
Then we gave the nice Russians a few,
Joseph cleaned them up nice, and he added some spice
Oh, they made such a succulent stew!
(spoken:)  "The roosters, not the Russians!"
 (chorus)

Now I have three new hens, they are out in the pen
Red and brown, and a small white one too,
They are loving and sweet, and they don’t peck my feet
I’m so glad that we started anew!

(“New Chorus!”)
Three chickens, three chickens, three chickens are great!
They lay eggs just for me, and they’re nice as can be
And I’ve not heard a single crow all day!
