Ruben ben Yosef's Order of the Pelican Scroll,
by Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova

"I am most proud of the layout of this scroll (although the
clouded leopard turned out pretty darn good). It's based on
the simple form of balanced composition divided into four parts,
with the pictures in opposite corners. I wanted to use the leopard's
head, which would fit quite nicely into the letter 'U' but using
the standard layout, with the capital letter in the upper left-hand
corner, the leopard would be staring up into space and would ruin the
design. Flipping the layout upside down solved the problem. The ends
of the banners which would hold the signatures and the seal-circles form
deliberate angled lines to lead the eye back into the composition. I made
one mistake, which is on the motto scroll. The motto should read
Chirugeons Love Blunt Trauma (Ruben was elevated primarily for his
work as a chirugeon, which is why the badge appears in the last banner
-- a great space-filler)-- but I somehow managed to drop out the 'u' in
'trauma' and when I noticed it, Ruban wouldn't let me fix it. The motto
is based on an in-joke circulating amongst the chirugeonate at the time."
