Why DO I Do This To Myself?
"Once all of the white painting of the filigree border was complete, all of it was over painted again with gold gouache. The non worked areas of the scroll were protected with pieces of scratch paper. Despite this, the surface still got scuffed and marked, but nothing major and it was all correctable afterwards.
"Unfortunately, painting everything twice made the fine lines in the filigree lose some of their spontaneity; the gold border is nice but it doesn't have quite the same delicate appearance as it had when the entire thing was still white. I'm told that gold gouache has enough actual gold it that it can be burnished, but I decided that having experienced that dubious pelasure while rubbing all of the text, I would give it a pass this time. My feeling was that the scroll was shiny enough -- why, to do more would be just plain ostentatious, if not outright snotty." -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
