A Closer Look

"This is a close-up view of the soldier in the same state as the previous photo.

"Originally I had thought to use warm colors on the soldier -- warm browns, golden yellows, maybe some sky blue -- in contrast to the predominately cool colors on the opposite figure. However, the soldier bulked larger in his space than the lady did, and somewhat crowded the text. Warm colors cause an object to approach and I needed this figure to recede, which meant using colors from the cool side of the color wheel. I already had a large area of warm red going on over there and the chain mail was also very light in color, which didn't help matters any. So the cloak was painted with cool blues, and the dark Prussian Blue helped move the figure more into the background." -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
