Calligraphy - Second Draft
"This is the second draft of the calligraphy. This set was to make sure the changed font would still fit inside the box with room left over for the signatures at the bottom, and acquire some practice with the silver paint. In this case, the paint was made with powdered aluminum (actual silver would tarnish black fairly quickly) mixed with gum arabic and glair. I quickly found out that each letter had to be painted two and sometimes three times to get an even appearance and cover up the black background. After doing that on the first five lines, I realized that I didn't have to worry about coverage on the practice piece -- I just needed to make sure the darn thing would fit! Once it was done, I used an agate "dog tooth" burnisher on the first three and a half lines -- the aluminum paint burnished very well and became very white and shiny as you can see in the photo." -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
