"Next, the line enders in the text and the Lombardic letters down the side of the scroll were done. The colors chosen echo those in the large letter -- the blue from the sky, the green from the hills, and the red from the background. Red was used only for smaller bits because it's very difficult to use straight red in the light-dark-almost white shading technique without having it turn pink. In the Visconti Book of Hours the artist used magenta, which is already on the pink side and doesn't have that problem, but he also used magenta widely in the thematic miniature scenes. No magenta in this scroll and it would have clashed.
"Finally, the line inside the ivy border was painted in green, light green, and a very pale green highlighted line. All that remains now is the ink-work for the ivy vines in the border. " -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
