"After the portrait was completed, some time was spent just looking at it. Something wasn't quite right. Aldith reviewed it and the consensus was that the lighting on the side of Juan's face wasn't right -- too much of his forehead was illuminated when it should have been in shadow. A check of the shape of the highlighted area on that side of his face confirmed it and more work was done on the face, darkening up more area until things matched. Also, the tablecloth was painted twice -- the first time everything was just too bright once the paint had dried (gouache dries lighter than it goes on). The diapered part of the tablecloth was painted again with a darker yellow overall and the lozengy diapering pattern painstaking painted back in.
"The background to the lightning-bolt diapering behind the capital letter was painted with Spectrum Red, then the letter itself painted with Lamp Black. Once it had dried, the stems of the laurel wreath were painted in with shell gold and lightly burnished." -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
