Having the Blues

"This is a very rough color study for the sky. Just pulling out a bunch of different blues and experimenting around. Payne's Gray was used in the dark part of the clouds and lightened with Permanent White to make the rain curtain; the rest was a mixture of Prussian Blue and Ultramarine Blue, dulled with the addition of some Orange Lake Medium and then lightened with Permanent White. The sky was a mixture of Phalo Blue and Ultramarine Blue, lightened with white. This was the first attempt at rendering a lightning bolt. Everything was done on a big piece of scratch paper which was down to protect the work surface; later some water got dropped on it and the strokes of paint surrounding it were from subsequent renderings as the color was tested for a match." -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
