Gold Leaf complete |

"Aldith worked many hours on laying the gold leaf; she found the process exacting, soothing, and claimed it induced a zen-like calm which she appreciated after her hectic work days. (I myself found the process to be exacting, exasperating, and a general pain in the behind, something I find is usually the case when using period materials -- there's a reason why nobody does it that way in this day and age!) Having no idea what was really involved when the composition was planned, the piece has one heck of a lot of gold on it. The gold background behind the intricate Lombardic letters was particularly trying, and in future we would probably make the letters gold, rather than the background behind them. Gesso was used on the laurel leaves for the raised effect; the rest of the gold work was flat gilding." -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
