The White Underpainting
It was time to take a deep breath and start painting the aurora onto the painted sky background.
A lot of time went into working and reworking the white version of the aurora to get the right
look and to "soften" the edges of the paint. This wasn't as successful as I hoped due to the
fact that the white paint was resting on top of two other layers of paint. Too much scrubbing
around, and the under painting started to shine up through, along with more of the pernicious
black dye in the illustration board below. In a couple of places, I had to restore the blue
paint around it. It never got as softly luminous a look as that second color study, but eventually
I had to stop playing with it or risk ruining what I had.
