But I Want Peash
A trifle out of focus but this shows the progress of the over painting of the miniature.
The tree in the background is an in-joke. While I was sketching the background for the miniature,
I showed it to Garth and explained how a tree was needed there for the composition, but I hadn't
decided what kind of tree it was going to be. Maybe an oak (emblematic of the West), or possibly
a laurel tree as this was a Laurel scroll.
Garth said firmly, "There's only one kind of tree it can be." "What's that?" I asked. "Peash," he replied with a smile. This made me laugh out loud as it recalled a certain infamous trip to Caid when Aricia and Eric were King and Queen of the West. We were serving on their Court at the time and had many hilarious moments on that day-trip down to Caid Crown, capped by a very late-night dinner at a restaurant on Interstate 5, The Apricot Tree by name. When it got down to dessert, the waitress told us that they had pie. "Oh, I want peash pie," said the Queen (don't ask me why Aricia says "peash" instead of peach, but she does). "Sorry," said the waitress, '"We don't have peach." "No peash?" said Her Majesty, disappointed. "What kind do you have?" As the waitress opened her mouth, the entire table-full of us chorused, "Apricot!" The waitress grinned and said, "That's right -- we've only got apricot." "No peash? Why only apricot?" asked the disconsolate Aricia. "Because it's The Apricot Tree, Aricia -- APRICOT!" responded her mouthy courtiers. The waitress was enjoying the heck out of this. "Okay, cut it out," said Her Majesty, somewhat miffed but starting to smile too.
So the tree is a Peash -- um, Peach tree. -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
