Positive And Negative
This is a close-up of the miniature while still in the white under painting stage. Note the white lines made by transferring the pencil sketch on tracing paper over to the black illustration board. Chloe is a black cat with a white blaze and other white patches on her body (known visible in this pose except the white on her back foot, which is tucked under her chin) and would be wearing her red collar, but here you can see the faint outline of the rest of her, along with the drapery of Aricia's sideless surcoat. The rose bushes were free-handed in after looking at pictures of a lot of rose bushes.

Aldith Angharad St. George drew the body of the figure for me. I posed (holding an Oerthan fur rose in my hand and a big flexible straw hat held upside down and curved into the approximate shape of the flat collecting basket I envisioned) and Aldith sketched me in that position with the curved kidney-bean shape for the "basket" on my hip, then added the dress with the lovely folds cascading about the feet. I drew in Aricia's head and face from a nice photo Garth took of her when she was Princess of Cynagua, turned the hat shape into a basket with handle, added in Chloe and all of the background and foreground. -- Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
