Andrew of the Vine's Order of the Leaf of Merit (w/Award of Arms) scroll,
by Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova
"Yes, the portrait is that of the recipient. Andrew earned our undying
gratitude at an SCA camping event by disposing of a certain 'mystical
manly man-thing' when assisting in cleaning up the site. I was moved
to do his award scroll by way of punishment -- er, reward. The scroll
layout is the simplest form of balanced composition, divided into four
parts, with the pictures in opposite corners. I work on 3-ply Bristol
paper, which is a good thing as I nearly wrecked the entire scroll while
finishing up the calligraphy. I added some embellishment to the last line
of text, forgot I had done so and started erasing pencil lines. While
brushing the eraser bits off, I brushed the not-quite-dry ink on the bottom
line and wiped a smear of ink right up through half of the text. Some of
the ink came up with frantic erasing; the rest I let dry entirely, then cut
around letters and peeled a layer of paper up with a very sharp knife (a
scalpel, actually)." -- Tatiana
