History: This is the capital province of the Kingdom of the West and the birthplace of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The first tournament was held on May 1, 1966 in the backyard of Diana Listmaker in Berkeley, California. It was not until the Westercon XX Demonstration on July 1, 1967 that an SCA activity was held outside the province. Activities in the province were handled by the Kingdom officers until 1971, when the Province acquired its own officers.
From the March, 1973 issue of The Page, a note from the Calendar, regarding an event scheduled for the Province of the Mists:
"So officially named by the Corporation. We will just have to learn to distinguish between the Province of the Mists, in the Counties of Alameda and Contra Cost, and the Principality of the Mists, also known as the Bay Area."
Up until that time, the Province was called in newsletters "The Province in the East Bay".
Location: N. Alameda County, California
