"The History of Crystalmist" -- provided in email by Francis of Saxony, Nov. 21, 2009

"In 1981, a scientist from Montana found an SCA demo in Yreka, CA. He approached Paul of Somerton of An Tir and asked, “Why do these varlets lay upon another so?” his lady said, “Oh, he speaks our language,” and Crystalmist was born.

The scientist became Friar Francis, intending to sit in the shade, play his lute, be a monk, and watch the fun with his lady. However, the lute became lots of fun to all, and the erstwhile friar was re-named Bard Francis of Saxony by the An Tirians.

He proceeded to set up the Shire of Crystalmist. The name was suggested by a 12-year old boy at an early shire meeting, and passed by voice vote, also Bard Francis chosen Seneschal by popular acclaim. It was almost named Blackspire or Mountainsgate due to Black Butte and Mt. Shasta, prominent local Mountains. Crystalmist was chosen due to our affinity for crystals among local folk, and snow and icicles were put on the banner.

Prominent later West members were Sean Greythorne and Beerslayer the Beerbarian. Some went to An Tir. We played with An Tir as much as West, for we were halfway between Springfield and San Francisco. Many confused us with Old Shasta Shire, and we were hard put to overcome a crazy reputation of awful Shastan jokes.

In 1982-83 or about AS 17 we became a Shire and at the urging of Bard Francis, joined to Principality of Cynagua rather than be a marcher shire. Frederick of Holland Herald officiated and we received considerable guidance from Sir Hillary of Serendip. Our first big event was the Blackspire Maneuvers which resulted from theft of a rock from Black Butte. Duke Frederick came up to help us in the war with An Tir to get it back …painted pink (the rascals)! From that incident derived the wonderful West An Tir Wars.

When Bard Francis won the Egils Viking Tourney in Year 27, he vowed after such an honor he would never lift his sword against An Tirians, his friends. His vow was true.

Bard Francis found a replacement after 9 years of service as Founding Seneschal, and the shire rose and fell three times in the 1990s. The fourth came when Emrik of Vakkerfell returned and took the job in 2004. The shire population is about 6 persons in 2009.”
