History: The Shire of Cloondara was originally the Province of St. Andrew's -- first founded in 1971. This group broke up for reasons not known by the person maintining this history, and was reformed later as Cloondara.
St. Andrew's: "I was the original seneschal of St. Andrew. It basically ran for several years and finally broke up due to a lack of members and our general inability to get much organized. In the end, all of us that formed it were not really a cohesive group and went our separate ways. It was much easier to just drive across the bay and go to events there."
"We did do a couple of nice bardic type events at one of the bars in San Francisco, though I can't for the life of me remember the name of the bar. It had a sort of Irish decour as I recall." -- Steven MacEanruig
Wilhelm von Schlüssel's original history includes this information: Province of St. Andrew's.
The following is from an attachment in Word sent by the current seneschal of Cloondara, Art mac Ceallaigh, February 7, 2012: The Shire of Cloondara, (pronounced Cloon-DAR-ah) shares its name with the Parish of Clondra (a.k.a. Cloondara) in County Longford, Ireland and is synonymous with the modern city of San Francisco. The name comes from the Gaelic Cluain Da Rath which means "The Meadow of the Two Forts." Since "Forts" can also be taken to mean castles or towers, one glance at the Golden Gate Bridge's two towers and you can see why the name was chosen.
The residents of the Parish of Clondra, Longford, Ireland, have no idea where the ancient forts their parish is named for were located as all traces of both fortifications have long since vanished.
The Shire was originally formed by naval personnel serving aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise during the early '70s as one of the SCA's most famous groups: "The Floating Shire". The Floating Shire subsequently moved ashore to San Francisco when the Enterprise was redeployed to Norfolk, Virginia and The Floating Shire's name was changed to Cloondara in October of 1983, replacing the then-defunct shire of St. Andrews.
