For Ragnar -- On His Journey to Valhalla

May, 2014 (A.S. XLIX)
Syele van der Rosen

I sing of a man of undoubtable worth
A lion, a titan of glorious birth
A laugher, a lover, a father, a friend
To the gods all assembled his tribute I send

For Ragnar, shield breaker, fog maker, a man of An Tir
Ragnar, stone miner, none finer, always of good cheer
Ragnar, gold giver, fierce liver and breaker of rings
Ragnar, foe ender, Summits defender and comrade of Kings

This warrior with dane axe, with greatsword or spear
To battle he sallies with no sense of fear
With strength and with honor his foes he does face
Inspired by his lady’s fair virtue and grace

For Ragnar, shield breaker, fog maker, a man of An Tir
Ragnar, stone miner, none finer, always of good cheer
Ragnar, gold giver, fierce liver and breaker of rings
Ragnar, foe ender, Summits defender and comrade of Kings

With laughter so booming, so loud and so free
A smile always ready for his company
A story, a caper, a barter or trade
Our friend is the stuff of what legends are made

For Ragnar, shield breaker, fog maker, a man of An Tir
Ragnar, stone miner, none finer, always of good cheer
Ragnar, gold giver, fierce liver and breaker of rings
Ragnar, foe ender, Summits defender and comrade of Kings

Quick witted, strong tempered, a flame of the north
From the grail of the Summits his greatness shines forth
Like starlight or campfires round which we all sing
Now laud him as loud as you'd laud any king

For Ragnar, shield breaker, fog maker, a man of An Tir
Ragnar, stone miner, none finer, always of good cheer
Ragnar, gold giver, fierce liver and breaker of rings
Ragnar, foe ender, Summits defender and comrade of Kings

"Performed for my dear friend Ragnar Thorbjornsson, at his last hurrah before the Allfather called him home. I will love him forever ." -- Syele van der Rosen
