The Moon is High

by

JANICE

The moon is high and the hounds bay low,
My own true love's in the woods below,
He's facing death as he faced life:
The baying hounds and his cold, sharp knife.

How have I come to love this Tom,
Who can do no right for the sake of wrong?
Why do I wait in my chamber bare
With trembling hands and pointless prayer?

But Tom's been good and Tom's been kind,
He placed his life in these hands of mine.
Tomorrow week and Tom and I'd be wed,
But my poor Tom, he'll soon be dead.

He's wild, he's bad, my duty cried,
He should not lie here by my side.
In seven years he's murdered many men:
And late last night he killed again.

I have a love, Thomas is his name,
A true, true love he will remain.
To him I am forever bound:
And I've turned him in to the baying hounds.

The moon is high and the hounds bay low,
My own true love's in the wood's below,
He's facing death as he faced life:
The bay hounds and his cold, sharp knife.

THOMAS

The moon is high and the hounds bay low,
My own true love's far away I know,
Tonight will be teh end of my life:
The baying hounds and my cold, sharp knife.

How did Jan come to love this Tom;
I can do no right, she can do no wrong.
Why should she wait in her chamber bare
With trembling hands and pointless prayer?

But Jan is good and Jan is kind,
In her hands she holds this life of mine.
Tomorrow week and Jan and I'd be wed:
Alas! dear God, I'll soon be dead.

I'm wild, I'm bad, my conscience cried,
I should not lie there by her side.
With bloody hands I've murdered many men:
So late last night I killed again.

I have a love, Janice is her name,
My true, true love she will remain.
To her I am forever bound:
And she's turned me in to the baying hounds.

The moon is high and the hounds bay low,
My own true love's far away I know,
Tonight must be the end of my life:
The baying hounds -- or my cold, sharp knife.
