Defenders of the Flame
Padráig Donn Mc Mathúna
Mists/Cynagua War, AS XXVIII

In honor of those all of those who founded the SCA
(and in particular Duke Frederick of Holland)

We gathered well the scattered shards of truth and chivalry.
We forged them well with honor’s fire from the coals of bravery.
We crafted well an honest blade to use for causes right
And built well here a castle strong as warders of the light.

We are the makers of The Dream.
We are The Guardians of the Sun.
We are the Keepers of the Way.
We are Defenders of the Flame.

We kindled well the fire pure that burns in honest folk.
We opened well their sleeping eyes and they threw away their yoke.
We showed them well the ancient ways and watched them rise to stand
And shared the fire of knowledge well and watched them light their lands.

We know well that we were the first and know we’re not the last.
We know well that the fire burns bright and illuminates the past.
We know well that the way is hard in a world where rich makes right
And vow we all to keep the way and guard the precious light.

"This piece makes use of the same starting words for each stanza, ends in rhyming couplets and has unintentional alliteration. As with most of what I write, imagery is important." -- Padráig Donn Mc Mathúna
