Queen's Guard
by
Leah Raedaelf of Pagham
For the Bard of the West competition, Beltane A.S. 38

We have trained many years in the hopes of Her summons,
Ever inspired by the westering sun.
Striving to earn a place, here ‘midst the mighty,
Where duty and honor both blend into one.

And then came the day when the offer was given,
The quiet request to assist our new Queen.
How well we will serve Her to merit this honor
And where Her path takes us remains to be seen.

But kneeling before Her, receiving Her favor,
The trust of our Queen fuels a fire deep inside;
For She has allowed us to champion Her honor.
No bard could put words to the depth of our pride.

No threat to our Lady shall ever get past us,
No harm may approach Her on field or in hall.
We are granted the duty to safeguard Her honor,
We’ve sworn now to see Her kept safe, though we fall.

We will work all our lives to be true to Her summons,
Ever inspired by the westering sun.
Privileged to hold our place, here ‘midst the mighty,
Where duty and honor both blend into one.
