I bore a tricky trifle
And the cook said “Do not trifle
In the serving of this trifle
To the mistress of the table”

But alas, I was unable
In the serving of the trifle
To escape the trifle’s trifling
With the mistress of the table

Clad in argent, not in sable
And the stain it was no trifle
For the trifle was not argent
Purpure rather was its label

But sweet mistress of the table
She forgave me for the trifle
And my voice she did not stifle
Rather bade, as I was able

Tell the story of this trifle
That your friends learn not to trifle
In the serving of a trifle
To the mistress of the table
