Eden No More

Antonio Giordano da Sicilia
12th Night Coronation, January, 2010 (A.S. XLIV)

A Cold Autumn wind has chilled my heart,
The peace and quiet of my world departs,
Summer gives way to a season of strife
Eden no more, now desolate and dark.

These cold, stormy days have broken my heart,
The peace and quiet of my world departs,
That which was one, splintered and undone,
That happy world whole, now pieces apart.

This uncivil strife has sicken’d my heart,
The peace and quiet of my world departs,
The bread of my life, now tasteless and stale.
The wine of my life, now bitter and tart.

These angry, harsh days have pierced my heart,
The peace and quiet of my world departs,
Like swords and spears, harsh words become weapons,
Thoughts and deeds are like arrows and darts.

Unrelenting darkness has still’d my heart,
The peace and quiet of my world departs,
Once happy garden, now bleak and bereft,
Eden no more, now desolate and dark.
