"This piece was created in June of 2003 while my family was preparing to move from California to Ohio. When ever I needed a break from packing and planning the move, this was my stress relief project. The finished product looks very little like I originally planned it. I repeatedly took sections out after stitching them when I wasn't happy with how it was looking, but I'm very satisfied with the final product. I finished the piece in time to enter it in the West Kingdom's Arts competition at June Crown. The category for that competition was Fine Arts: Beaded Embroidery. I was fortunate enough to have the judges select this piece as the 'winning' entry.
"I was inspired to create this piece after seeing “Portrait of the Margrave Casimir of Brandenburg”. (You can see the portrait at The Medieval Beadwork Pages - http://www.medievalbeads.com/docs/items/16th-pearl-pelican.html) After seeing this portrait I knew I had to create something similar for myself." -- Elspeth
